  1. Brainstorm over a period of weeks all the tasks you carry out and repeat and list them under different categories.
  2. Write down all the steps for each category, task, and sub-task.
  3. Group the tasks together and see if any overlap.
  4. The next time you carry out one of the tasks, write down each step, no matter how small.
  5. Make sure you write as much detail as possible, you may know a shortcut in your mind but someone else won’t ( write the tasks like a “Dummies guide to”.
  6. Follow the steps and test the SOP yourself.
  7. Give the SOP to someone else and see if they complete the task correctly.
  8. Record in a document such as Word in a step-by-step format.
  9. Keep copies in a central place for all to access.
  10. Review and update regularly.
